Scientific name: Viola walteri
Walter’s violet is a low-growing perennial whose native range is sporadic through North Florida that can die back in Winter. It likes full to partial shade. It prefers moist soil. One source says it can survive in or tolerate dry soil; however, I found it did not survive the long, recent drought in sandy, dry soil even with shade and leaf litter.
Leaves and flowers are edible.
South Carolina Native Plant Society says the species is a larval host for “butterfly larvae.”
