Scientific Name: Vernonia gigantea
Tall ironweed is a perennial native to Alachua County that dies back in the winter after getting quite tall. It bears spindly, deep purple flowers and is a larval host for the spring azure butterfly. It likes full to partial sun and somewhat moist soil.
The stock I currently have comes from seeds collected in Dixie County along the Suwannee River. The leaves of the plants looked like V. gigantea. However, the plants were smaller. I don’t know if that was in their genetics or due to my grandfather mowing them.
